Hello everyone! As we are in the half of spring semester after break and reaching the end of the academic year, I want to wish for everyone to finish out strong and on a positive note. In my first week back from break getting into the groove of school again, I participated in the conversation of Media Literacy in class. We used a tool called Checkology, where we were given exercises and videos to help sharpen our skills on the media that we see on a day to day basis. Exercises helped in areas such as determining the actual source of a photo and using multiple steps to check validity in a source before believing it.
My favorite exercise from the Checkology experience was the Dasani water clip. I personally found the entire situation surrounding the water interesting because i'm gonna be honest, my mom buys it and I do drink it. I do notice it tastes different compared to other waters though, but I did not know it was considered a bad water until this came about. The activity includes watching a TikTok where a creator is listing the top 3 worst ingredients in the water. The last ingredient actually was what made me want to use the internet or another source to check the credibility because it sounded insane that something used for prisoners on death row would be put into water for the public to consume. I personally like to go to the comments on posts all the time, even if its a funny post I go straight to the comments, but for informational posts is when I like to go to Google and search to see if multiple sources are saying the same thing. I prefer to look for news sources or research based sources and I always look to see if multiple are saying the same thing, but when I see different information on each source is when I start to question. Overall, I had a lot of fun exploring the Checkology website, and this was my first time ever using a site like this one. I feel that everyone should use this tool honestly, it should be for both class and personal use. With campaign season being underway at my school, I feel this was the perfect time to introduce this tool and with elections being this year. As the public, I feel that we should be educated on what goes on in the world we live in, but also know when to differentiate the truth from information created to trick us into belief.
This marks the end of this week's blog post! Thank you for taking the time to read up on media literacy, and check out Checkology if you are interested using the link below!
