Hello everyone, welcome back to another week on my blog. I would like to start off by saying the spring semester is quickly coming to a close and I cannot believe how fast the time has went by. Having the opportunity to create and post on this blog has been an honor, and has encouraged me to possibly start one where I talk about my interests and maybe shows that I watch, as I enjoy the blog format and posting. Anyway, lets dive into this week's topic which is reparations.
Now, reparations is a sensitive subject when it comes to the community that is impacted by it. Reparations can be seen as a way of compensation in a sense, but it really is more than just the word. For many years now, people who have felt the impacts of slavery have pushed for reparations to be given to them by those who have enslaved and controlled them. But, often accountability is not taken on that end or the topic is ignored and the excuse of "slavery being over" is given. But, this week my professor told me a story about how his best friend's cousin stole his class ring. He then asked us if we felt that he had a right to force the person who stole it to pay for the damages, to which most of us said yes. But, it was not until he reworded the story on us asking why we were scared to which he said "Would you be scared if I told you I stole your land, people and everything to your name, you cannot do anything about it". That was when my answer quickly changed. I realized that reparations really is just the surface of the topic, there is MUCH more to this topic. As I am assigned more media to consume on the topic of reparations I feel that once I truly understand and know the background as my professor says, I then will be able to really know how I feel about this.
As I wrap up my post and close out for the week, I want to take the time to highlight a source that I was given called CARICOM, which is short for Caribbean Communities. It is a movement that pushes for repair and relief for the Caribbean countries impacted by racism, all in a 10 point plan that highlights areas that assistance is needed in. Below I will have the link to their website to learn more about them and who they are. Thanks for tuning in and have a great week!
