Hi everyone! Happy April, and welcome back for another post on this lovely week. As the weather gets warmer I hope everyone is getting outside and enjoying the sun, while also keeping allergy meds on hand because it is allergy season. For this week's post, we are gonna talk about one of my favorite TED Talks that I got to rewatch for class this week.
The TED Talk I am gonna talk about today is Chimamanda Adichie's "The Danger of a Single Story". Now, I watched this TED Talk my senior year of high school and I absolutely loved the message that was shared through her story telling. I loved the bits of humor added in as she said that her "tribal music" was Mariah Carey. But, the importance of this TED talk is that it teaches you about how common single stories are, as well as how easy it is for them to influence how you view things or people. One example of a single story from the video is when the speaker came from Nigeria to attend college in America, and was upset at how her roommate assumed she did not have much, did not know how to work a stove and listened to primarily tribal music. The single story that the roommate used to make a predetermined opinion on how to treat Chimamanda is that since she is from Nigeria she does not have much, so she should feel bad for her. A common single story in the US is people believing that most black people are poor. This TED talk holds a huge place in my heart as I learned not only the term "single story" but learned how these stories are powerful in the sense that they form the way you view others who the story is based on.
This marks the end of this week's blog post. I hope you enjoyed reading and learned something new. Have a great day and enjoy the rest of your week. I an including the 3 minute version of the TED Talk below if you are interested in watching for yourself.
